Analysis of the Canadian Boreal Forest Using Enhanced Resolution Ers-1 Scatterometer Imagery

چکیده
Scatterometer backscatter measurements ( u ) are primarily and traditionally used to estimate wind speed and direction over the ocean. This paper presents an investigation of the backscatter coefficient of boreal forest and neighboring vegetation regions. ERS-1 backscatter A-values of the Canadian boreal forest are imaged using a resolution enhancement algorithm for this analysis. Regions of boreal forest, tundra, and grassland are individually analyzed over the extent of the ERS-t scatterometer's data set (1992-1995). The annual variation of the mean u 0 value for each region is presented. Distinct seasonal variations exist for these vegetation types. Boreal forests exhibit a stronger response ( ...... 2.5 dB) during warm summer months than during the snow and ice covered winter months. The results of this study indicate good potential for further analysis of boreal forest regions using ERS-1 scatterometer data.

Ice Classification in the Southern Ocean Using ERS-1 Scatterometer Data
Class 1CE MY Abstract A simple method for classifying Southern Ocean sea ice from enhanced resolution ERS-1 scatterometer images is presented. The enhanced resolution images are created with the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (SIR) algorithm. This algorithm uses a dense, irregular sample grid created with multiple, overlapping passes of the ERS-1 scatterometer t o achieve resolutions better...

A set of ERS-1 SAR images along with airborne nonimaging ranging scatterometer (HUTSCAT) measurements and in situ surveys has been obtained from the Sodankylä test site (center latitude = 67.41 N, center longitude = 26.58 E) in Northern Finland. A total of five measurement campaigns were organized during 1991–1993. Nineteen test lines have been selected from the test site to represent different...
متن کاملCharacterizing ]Earth's Surface Using Moderate Resolution 14Ghz Scatterometer Imagery: Early Results from NSCAT Construction
I. INTRODUCTION Currently there is an extended effort to measure and model global climate. Small-scale vegetation maps, some derived from satellite imagery, are important components of these models. Because of the very large continental regions involved, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery and its derivative vegetation index products with resolutions between 1 and 12 km hav...
متن کاملObject-Based Classification of UltraCamD Imagery for Identification of Tree Species in the Mixed Planted Forest
This study is a contribution to assess the high resolution digital aerial imagery for semi-automatic analysis of tree species identification. To maximize the benefit of such data, the object-based classification was conducted in a mixed forest plantation. Two subsets of an UltraCam D image were geometrically corrected using aero-triangulation method. Some appropriate transformations were perfor...
